Connected Box: A Playful and Functional Design for Kids' Rooms

Integrating Learning and Creativity

Inspired by the concept of a popular toy, Pebbledesign presents Connected Box, a unique and interactive design for kids' rooms. This innovative concept aims to create a space where a 6-year-old boy can seamlessly transition between playtime and study time, fostering his learning and creativity.

The room, designed by Pebbledesign, is specifically tailored to meet the needs of a 6-year-old boy. The layout takes inspiration from real-life scenarios and is adorned with joyful colors, reflecting the child's fantasy world. The walls and outlines of the room are kept in pristine white, while the furniture is a vibrant combination of yellow, red, blue, green, and black, all centered around the idea of a Connected Box.

The furniture pieces in the room, such as bunk beds and a long study table, are designed with square and rectangular forms, mirroring the concept of a box. The carpet, on the other hand, breaks away from this pattern with its circular shape. This intentional contrast adds visual interest and stimulates the child's imagination.

To bring the design to life, Pebbledesign utilizes a combination of white lacquer and colored lacquer for the furniture. The units are supported by dyed irons in matching colors, and comfortable cushions are made from felt. This thoughtful choice of materials ensures both durability and comfort.

The room measures 330*320 cm, providing a total area of 10.5 m². The bunk beds are designed at a height of 140 cm, allowing easy access for the child while also providing storage space underneath. The long table, spanning 200 cm, offers ample space for books, notebooks, toys, and even a computer, catering to the child's various needs.

One of the main highlights of Connected Box is its ability to create different spaces within the same room. The wide table serves as both a study desk and a play area, with deep drawers underneath for storage. At the end of the bed, a platform acts as an elevated playground, adding an extra dimension of fun to the room. Additionally, all cabinet doors and drawers are designed in the shape of connected boxes, allowing the child to interact and play with the furniture.

The Connected Box design project began in September 2011 and was completed in January 2012 in Gunesli, Istanbul, Turkey. Throughout the process, extensive research was conducted on the daily life and needs of a 6-year-old child. The design team also took into account the preferences and demands of both the child and the parents, ensuring a satisfying and functional space for everyone.

Connected Box has received recognition for its innovative and creative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2015. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.

With Connected Box, Pebbledesign has successfully created a playful and functional space for kids, seamlessly integrating learning and creativity. This unique design offers a delightful environment where a child can explore, learn, and let their imagination run wild.
